blackwpancakesThe timeless history of the pancake began in ancient times, when the simplest form of cooking was to heat batter in a pan or on a stone over direct heat.

Pancakes, one of the earliest forms of bread, were not called pancakes until some time in the late 1800s.  Still, no matter what the name, pancakes were enjoyed all over the world and still are today.

A pancake recipe appears in an old cookbook by the Roman epicure Apicius.

Here is an amusing bit of pancake lore from the book Better Homes and Gardens Pancakes and Toppings by Darlene Kronschnabel:

“If you throw pancakes to the rooster and he eats them without calling the hens, you will remain single.  If he calls the hens, you will marry.”
